This arduous trail requires that hikers, and their horses (and their riders) be in good condition for the 2000 + foot elevation change. The trail begins at the Old Haul Road and climbs through second growth redwoods and mixed evergreen forest. At the top of the ridge small stands of knobcone pines can be found with madrones and live oaks. The Butano Ridge Trail Loop can be accessed from either the Wurr Road entrance or Portola Redwoods State Park.
