Heritage Grove Trail is accessible from the Sam McDonald parking lot (map) or from a small trailhead parking lot off Alpine Road (map). From the Sam McDonald parking lot the trail follows geographical contours for about 1.6 miles to the Heritage Grove area, where some of the most spectacular old growth redwoods still stand. From here the trail climbs a steep grade for 0.9 miles to the Towne Ridge just below the Sierra Club hikers Hut. A 4+ mile loop can be made by returning to Sam McDonald parking lot via the Towne Fire Road junction at the top. The Heritage Trail is limited to hikers only.
