In August 2019, the San Mateo County Parks Department will begin upgrades on the Moss Beach Park playground. The new design will preserve the old playground's charm while enhancing safety and accessibility.

Project Background

Built by a community-led non-profit and local residents in 2004, the playground came under Department management in 2014. The original design lacked cement footings, anchors, or foundations, and as a result many of the play structures have begun to warp and sink, causing safety hazards.

In Spring of 2018, the community selected the preferred design for the replacement playground. The community showed a clear preference for wooden play structures. As well, the new design will feature additional play features, improved accessibility and clearer sightlines for supervising guardians, while maintaining the coastal theme of the playground.

Closure Information

On Wednesday, August 21, 2019 the play area for two to five year-olds will close for construction. The rest of the playground will close in November 2019. The new playground is scheduled reopen in early spring of 2020.
